Edwards honored with Barry B. Thompson Service Award

Jennifer Edwards, a Tarleton professor noted for her use of social networks, is the 2011 recipient of the Barry. B. Thompson Service Award for her contribution to student faculty relations outside of the classroom.
Dr. Edwards, an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies, was all smiles Wednesday as Tarleton President Dominic Dottavio made the surprise presentation of the award during a wind and solar energy seminar she helped organize.
“I thought he (Dr. Dottavio) was just coming to the event, and then I remembered I applied for the award,” Dr. Edward said. “I’m so happy to have such great students and faculty to work with here at Tarleton, and today I’m even more proud than usual to be a Tarleton Texan.”
The dean College of Liberal and Fine Arts – Dean Minix — said Edwards “brings a unique element to this university” and that her work is overall outstanding.
One of the factors that played a role in Edwards receiving the award was her use of the social networking sites, such as Twitter and Facebook, to reach her students outside of the classroom.
Dottavio said, “2 o’clock in the afternoon, 2 o’clock at night she’s always there online to answer questions.”
