The Stephenville community is getting an addition in town for pet owners and pet lovers. Pets Supplies Plus is having its grand opening tomorrow, Feb. 5, at 9 a.m. The store is located at 106 Christy Plaza, behind Cotton Patch Café. If you don’t live near this store, knowing that companies like VPD sell bird toys (and other various pet essentials) online, so you don’t have to feel like you’re missing out. As long as you get what you need, that’s all that matters.
The owner of Pet Supplies Plus, Spike Stoker, graduated from Tarleton State University in 2001 and immediately started working at Tractor Supply in Stephenville as part of the first crew to be trained. After 14 years of working there, he decided the community needed more variety in the pet department.
“We are here to take care of all of our neighbors and their pets and treat them like one of the family,” said Stoker.
He feels so strongly about making Stephenville residents feel welcome and “like family” that he has been letting curious community members into the not-yet-open store.
“We aren’t open,” said Stoker, “but we let them come in and check it out.”
Stoker wants to create a local, close-knit feel for the customers of Pets Supplies Plus.
“Everybody here has the same philosophy. I mean, we are here to care for all the neighbors in Stephenville, and we want to be known as the neighborhood pet store,” said Stoker. “All of us together, we are on customer service. I want you to know (and) trust in us that, when you come in the door, we are going to take care of you. We are going to sell it to you for a fair price. We’re going to carry everything out for you, and you don’t have to wait in line.”
Stoker said that Pet Supplies Plus will “carry pretty much every brand there is.” If a customer has a special request or needs a certain brand that may be unavailable at other stores in town, Stoker said that Pets Supplies Plus may be able to get it for them from the nearest warehouse.
“One thing that’s nice is that (if) we order Monday, you get it Tuesday or Wednesday. (If) we order it on Wednesday, you get it Thursday or Friday,” said Stoker.
Pets Supplies Plus will offer food and supplies for cats, dogs, fish, snakes, hamsters, mice, chinchillas, birds and others. The store will supply things such as treats, accessories, cages, a snake thermostat, and beds for land animals. There is also a vast selection of equipment available for aquatic animals too. Tanks suitable tropical fish, as well as standard tanks, heaters perfect for small fish tanks and large, as well as vast arrange of fish foods and tank features. They will also offer a section of treats that are specifically American-made.
“We are going to have a ton (of brands) that Stephenville has never seen before,” said Stoker.
Pet Supplies Plus will carry brands like Wellness, Earthborn, Ideal Balance, Origin, Science Diet, Iams, Beneful, Merrick and more.
Stoker bragged about their variety of pet toys and said, “If you can’t find a toy, your dog doesn’t like toys.”
As for live animals, Pet Supplies Plus will offer its customers live fish, birds, rodents and reptiles to purchase. They advise that customers educate themselves on their choice of pet beforehand by using sites like thebetapet.com and similar.
Even though the store is just now opening, Stoker and his team plan in the future to work with local shelters and rescues by holding adoption events. So far, they plan to work with Pets Are Worth Saving, Inc. and Community Animal Rescue Effort, with whom they became familiar while working at Tractor Supply.
The store currently has a local reader bulletin board for people to post lost and found animals, local events and other kinds of information pertaining to the animal world.
Pet Supplies Plus will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
