Man shoots himself at local apartment complex

By Mark Mallory –

A 52-year-old Stephenville man shot himself late Tuesday night outside of a bar in the Columns apartment complex just down the road from Tarleton State University, police said.

The shooting took place just outside The Pub, a bar located in the center of the complex, at 1400 W. Swan.
Police dispatch was contacted by someone present at the scene around 10:55 p.m., Stephenville Police Lt. Doug McClammy said.

“We were told that there was a man with a gun who had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.” McClammy said.
After police and paramedics arrived, the man was flown to a Ft. Worth hospital in critical condition.

McClammy said much about the incident remains unclear and that as of early Wednesday morning the man remained in critical condition.

Chase Sikes, a resident of the Columns apartment complex, says, “At first I thought that there was just shooting that went down outside my apartment. I felt unsafe until I realized what exactly happened despite the tragedy.”

“After I heard the shot, I looked out and saw a man in the back of his truck with his legs hanging off the bed,” Sikes said.

According to Sikes, police responded quickly and searched the complex thoroughly, calming concerns among residents worried about a shooting near where they live.

Jacob Bosely, a Tarleton student who lives at Columns, said he doesn’t “feel any less safe here, despite what happened last night.”

McClammy said the investigation is ongoing.
