DALLAS (AP) — Crime figures for Dallas show 84 murders have been reported through mid-July in an increase compared to a year ago.

The Dallas Morning News ( ) reports that’s up 15 percent from the same period in 2012 when 73 murders were reported.

Police Chief David Brown said Tuesday that most of the slayings involved criminals attacking other criminals.

Brown last December created a more than 100-member task force that spends the bulk of its efforts capturing violent felony offenders. The chief says sometimes when police go after drug dealers the competition for that area or a drug house creates a violent outcome.

Figures show Dallas had 151 murders during 2012. That’s up from 2011 when Dallas recorded 133 murders.
