Stephenville advances to state semi-finals
By Caleb McCaig –
Stephenville defeated Abilene Wylie 59-28 at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls Friday night, advancing to the 3a division one semi-finals against Kilgore High School. Wylie kept the game close for the first three quarters, but couldn’t keep up with the high scoring Stephenville offense.
The game, referred to in the media as “the state championship,” lived up to the hype. Stephenville’s offense was almost flawless. Stephenville quarterback Tyler Jones accounted for seven touchdowns by himself, including three through the air and four on the ground. Jones finished 21-34 for 319 yards and added another 80 on the ground.
Bryce Gunter had seven receptions for 110 yards and one touchdown. Alex Sanchez also added six receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. In all, Stephenville tallied up 570 total yards and didn’t punt the ball once during the entire contest.
Stephenville meets up with 11th ranked Kilgore High in Mansfield this upcoming Friday. The winner will advance to the state championship at Cowboys stadium against either Carthage or El Campo.
