Stephenville Police Department is investigating two incidents from Thursday night that lead to five students being hospitalized.

Students from Tarleton State University are involved and these cases are believed to have stemmed from initiation proceedings that were being held by two “drunk” softball teams. Rec Sports says that the drunk softball teams are not intramural teams.

Around 10:00 p. m. on April 20, the Stephenville Police Department responded to a complaint about a loud party. In the course of the investigation, police officers discovered someone who was in medical distress. Not long after that, officers found another person that appeared to be in medical distress as well. The Stephenville Fire Department Ambulance was dispatched and two individuals were brought to the hospital in serious condition.

Officers also arrested four people at this party: Josue Garay, 21, Jansen J. Savage, 22, Channing Flatt, 21, and Brad Austin Rutherford, 21.

Flatt, Savage, and Rutherford were arrested for Purchase/Furnish Alcohol to a Minor and for Disorderly Conduct. Garay was arrested for Public Intoxication.

Stephenville Police learned of a separate party at a different location while the officers were at the hospital investigating the first incident. This other party resulted in three more people being taken to the hospital by a private vehicle.

Tarleton State University and the campus Police Department are all working closely with the Stephenville Police Department.

SPD is also working with the Erath County Attorney’s Office and the Erath County District Attorney’s Office on resolving these incidents.

Flatt and Savage declined to comment. Garay and Rutherford did not reach back with Texan News by the time this article was published.

We will update and release more information as it becomes available.

Disclosure: Channing Flatt is currently the Sports Editor for Texan News Service.
