Tarleton freshman killed in single-vehicle accident

Michael McLearen, a member of Tarleton’s freshman class, died early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle accident.

The crash happened 4.5 miles outside of De Leon on CR 435 at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday morning, according to the accident report. The vehicle was traveling at an unsafe speed and lost control when it went over a large dip in the road, struck an embankment and rolled onto the left side and top of the truck in a ditch.

The driver, Zachary Ryon, 17, and other passenger, Haley Johnson, 18, were uinjured in the accident. None of the vehicle’s passengers were wearing seatbelts.

McLearen was an engineering technology major at Tarleton. He was originally from De Leon, Texas, where was involved in athletics in high school, playing basketball, football, and baseball, according to the Nowlan Anders Funeral Home website.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of De Leon.
