Tarleton Golf wrapped up the season with a sixth place finish at the Lone Star Conference Tournament at the Diamondback Golf Club in Abilene. This result leaves the Texans out of the Regional competition.
“I wish we could have gone to regionals, but this was a learning year for us, and I can’t wait to come back better and ready to compete next semester,” junior golfer Casey Leatherman said.
Tarleton holds the LSC record with 11 championship titles, having won 10 of the 11 previous tournaments.
On the bright side, Junie Khaw will participate in the Division II West-Regional Tournament as one of the six individuals attending from non-qualifying teams.
The sophomore golfer from Malaysia was named All-Conference First Team. She earned All-LSC Second Team honors her freshman season.
“It feels good to earn the LSC All-Conference again this year,” Khaw said. “It’s like a little award after the end of the season that keeps me going and trying to improve myself each year.”
Khaw led the Texans with a 79.6 scoring average in 14 rounds and won the Tarleton Invitational and the Oklahoma Intercollegiate tournaments.
Along with Khaw, Leatherman received conference honors. The junior from Huntsville, Texas earned honorable mention All-LSC.
“Our juniors, Casey and Breanna [Smith] , showed great leadership,” Khaw said.
Leatherman’s season-high was third-place at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Tournament, where she was named LSC Golfer of the Week for the first time in her career.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to play golf for an awesome school and a great conference,” Leatherman said.
Tarleton golf will be back in action in September for the 2019 fall season.
“The goal for next season is to improve our scores as a team and try to climb up in the rankings,” Khaw said. “We just have to know how to manage ourselves during the tournament and keep composure. Everyone’s score matters because we are playing as a team.”
