Over the summer, Tarleton State University students fled the campus to go out and do their own things. Many people went home to their families to work, go on vacation or just sink in the couch to get a break from school.

Some students spend their summer doing things a little bit differently. Lucus Rospond is a student and he spent his summer in Kansas, which is far from home for him.

“This summer I was accepted to the position of sports communications assistant for the Wichita Wind Suge,” Rospond said. “The internship duties included but were not limited to; creating game day graphics, clipping and posting highlights to social media, writing game recaps, engaging directly with fans at games and even making some memes.”

Being able to take these opportunities during the summer are good chances to build your resume and give you a few months to learn new skills.

“My favorite part was being able to write about and work around a sport that I have enjoyed as a fan for my entire life,” Rospond said. “It was also awesome to be working with some of the top MLB prospects in the nation.”

Rospond was able to learn many skills throughout the internship period that will last a lifetime.

“The biggest thing I learned through this internship was getting a feel for what it would be like to work day in and day out for a professional team,” Rospond said. “I’ve been told the sports industry is all about who you know and the connections you can make.”

While some students have these opportunities like Lucas, Naomi English had a different experience this summer.

“This summer I had the opportunity through Tarleton to study abroad in Costa Rica,” English said. “I’m part of the Texas Leadership Scholars Program and applied for this summer program.”

Studying abroad can bring many new learning experiences and is a special way of learning outside of Tarleton.

“My favorite part was getting to go on a wildlife tour on the beach and we saw sloths, monkeys, snakes and a stingray,” English said. “This was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, especially since I’m a wildlife major.”

Being able to get these opportunities are important and are a great way to spend the summer.
