Valentine’s Day is known for folks showing love to their significant others, whether it be with chocolate or flowers. However, for some people, Valentine’s Day means no such thing. The Purrs and Spurs Club decided to help out some students with this issue.
From Feb. 12-14, Tarleton State University Purrs and Spurs paired up with Erath County Humane Society (EHS) to help with the cats in the shelter. For $5, a student was able to write their ex’s name on the bottom of a litter box, which would later be donated to EHS.
The idea started with Grace Shrimpy, a senior communications student. For her Capstone project, Shrimpy decided to make this collaboration happen.
“For my communications Capstone, we’re partnering with them [EHS] and helping them out with fundraising and stuff like that,” Shrimpy said. “This is our first event that we’re doing with them.”
The litter box wasn’t the only offer Purrs and Spurs had.
“We’re also doing a raffle with Purrs and Spurs,” Shrimpy said. “For $1, they can get a raffle and get a t-shirt. All the proceeds will go to EHS and all the stray cats here on campus to buy vaccines and supplies for them.”
By Shrimpy partnering with Purrs and Spurs and EHS, students are able to become more aware of the campus’ stray animals, but how far was she hoping this would go?
“My goal is to raise money for the animals and to raise awareness for how many animals we do have that are at the Humane Society,” Shrimpy said. “They have an abundance of animals that need homes and need adopting. We’re trying to help raise awareness about it and just try to get some money donated so we can get the animals vaccines.”
