Few issues in this world are more irritating than parking. Whether it’s the matter of finding a spot or finally finding the perfect place to park, only to see that the person one spot over parked too far over the painted line, parking is something that can always be improved.

It’s also something that can be dangerous.

The National Safety Council reports that over 50,000 car accidents happen in parking lots every year.

By using these five tips for parking, you can ensure you will perfect your parking protocol.

Choose a Spot Wisely

When looking for a parking spot, be sure to put thought into choosing the best one. You don’t want to choose a spot that is crammed in between two cars, and you also don't want to pick one that is positioned in such a way that would make it hard to exit.

The goal is to get as close to your destination as possible, but if you are attending a large event, consider parking closer to an exit to avoid long exit lines.

Use Your Side Mirrors

Yes, your car has a backup camera and possibly even a 360 camera. But you still need to use your side mirrors to avoid parking crooked.

As you’re reversing into a parking spot, your driveway or even just along a curb, you should always look at your side mirrors to make sure your tires and back of your car are aligned correctly.

Only using your backup camera does not always mean you will be parked straight.

Maintain a Medium Speed

When parking, going too fast can lead to scraping other cars or hitting a curb and going too slow can hold up traffic and other drivers. You should try to always maintain a safe, but efficient speed.

Only Back in When Appropriate

Many people prefer backing into parking spots no matter the occasion. Especially with trucks or large SUVs, backing in can actually be far easier than pulling in.

However, there are certain situations where backing in may not be the wisest option.

For example, if there are vehicles behind you and backing up would require a lengthy stop and readjustment, then pulling in is probably wiser. If you are in a parking lot with slanted spaces, then pulling in is often mandatory to avoid driving the wrong way upon leaving the spot.

Be Courteous

Finally, be courteous when parking. Readjust instead of cutting it close when pulling in next to someone else’s car. If you scrape a car, then you should always leave a note. And finally, never cut people off in a parking lot to beat them to a spot.

Parking can be stressful and intimidating to some, but by following these helpful tips, you will park like a pro.
