A daily part of most students’ routines is locating a good study area to focus in order to achieve the best grades.

As heavy assignments and critical tests start, here are some of the best places to study off or on the Tarleton State University campus.

On Campus

The Dick Smith Library

The campus library is a popular study area for many students due to its late closing time and quiet environment.

The library also has options for students who wish to study in groups, with study rooms available on the third floor.

Adalee Updegraff, a student at Tarleton, chooses the individual study rooms as her favorite place to complete work and study.

“The study rooms are a great place because it keeps me from getting distracted with its enclosed space,” Updegraff said. “It has lights that can turn off so that I can have a choice of how I want to study, and has many outlets and a wide desk so I have a comfortable workspace.”

Brendan Kisinger also favors the library as his study area and describes his favorite elements about its environment.

“It’s pretty quiet, and I usually sit by the windows,” Kesinger said. “It’s just kind of a nice view, and I like sitting in a peaceful environment.”

The Thompson Student Center

The Thompson Student Center (TSC) on campus is the place to study for people who enjoy a busy setting or being surrounded by others.

The TSC has three floors, each with available seating for students.

The most active part of the TSC is the second floor, considered the main floor, with tables in the center of the room and the middle of the bustling action of campus life.

Upstairs, the seating area is more relaxed, with a higher chance to focus and seating that is either open or secluded for isolation, depending on your study style.

The bottom floor of the TSC has less seating but a more recreational feel to it with the pool tables available for student use.

The Thompson Student Center is a great place to study for the student who likes to be surrounded by action.

Empty Classrooms

There are some who may not know that if a classroom is vacant, students are allowed to use that room to study.

There are specific rooms and areas that require prior permission or reservation, such as Departmental Conference Rooms.

Aside from these, empty classrooms can be used by groups or individuals to study.

Off Campus

Cold Smoke Craft House

Cold Smoke Craft House is located in the same building as the Campus Outfitters Store and is a beautiful study area with a small coffee shop inside.

Cold Smoke is a very relaxing study environment — from its seating options, such as couches and booths, to the dim lighting of the rooms.

It is the perfect place to study for students who appreciate a more toned-down and aesthetically pleasing study area.

Macey LoRocca’s favorite place to study off of campus is Cold Smoke.

“Other people are working so I feel like I can work but I'm not being interrupted,” LoRocca said. “The aesthetic of Cold Smoke is warm, comfy and cozy, and it prompts me to do work.”

Starbucks

Most students are familiar with Starbucks from their coffee that helps keep them awake during those late night assignments.

Starbucks, however, is also a great place to study due to its cozy yet busy environment.

Starbucks is often the place to get work done since being surrounded by people may be the thing that motivates you to not procrastinate and focus on completing your assignments.

No matter where you decide to settle in to complete those assignments, Tarleton State University offers many options that fit each student's study style.
